Sustainable Energy to Drive Juneau’s Future
Juneau Hydropower, Inc is a hydro utility service promoting the economic growth of Juneau, as well as the city’s community values.
Juneau Hydro is a Certified Public Utility
Over 15 years ago, local investors and developers saw the need for renewable, secure energy sources in Juneau. With a focus on the environment, they set out to create Juneau Hydropower, which is finally entering the construction phase with its Sweetheart Lake facility. The people of Juneau will enjoy a stronger grid, more energy options, and a more sustainable future.
Sweetheart Lake: Gravity-Driven Renewable Energy
About 33 miles south of downtown Juneau, Sweetheart Lake drains into Gilbert Bay. The state-of-the-art Sweetheart Lake Hydroelectric Facility is designed with excellent electrical capacity that will strengthen and stabilize the local power grid. Plus, local climate and weather patterns make hydropower a no-brainer for Juneau.
The Sweetheart Lake Facility
- 19.8 MW 116,000 MWh
- 35 sq. mile watershed
- 106 sq mile electric utility service area
- 56.63 miles of high voltage transmission
This is the largest traditional dam storage hydropower project to be constructed in America since 1994.
The Juneau Hydropower Utility System high voltage transmission will add 3% to the total high voltage transmission in Alaska.
Fish-friendly hydro: This is the only traditional dam storage hydropower plant specifically designed to increase salmon habitat and increase salmon returns.
